A Season Turns in the Klein Karoo

As we reach the end of April, there has been a noticeable shift here in the Kannaland Municipality. Winter seems to have arrived a little earlier this year, bringing crisp mornings, cooler evenings, and a beautiful transformation across our landscape.

With the pomegranate harvest now behind us, olive season is in full swing. My husband and I are fortunate to live on Assegaay Bosch Nature Reserve, travelling daily through Mont Rouge Olive Estate's Olive Groves.

Here the olive trees are heavy with fruit, and the pickers are hard at work. In our area, olives are still handpicked, not mechanically harvested, and pressed right here! —producing exceptional olive oil unique to our region. Blue sky Organic's Olive Oil which is a locally produced organic offering or Mont Rouge's extra virgin olive oil are some of the oils produced right here in our region.
The soil and conditions here in our area is perfect for growing olives and we see more being planted almost daily!

With the recent rains, the drought has finally broken, and the Klein Karoo has transformed into a lush, green haven. We’re looking ahead with excitement to what promises to be a spectacular flower season.

From the Karoo Kitchen – Olive Tapenade

In celebration of olive harvest season:

Ingredients:

1 cup pitted olives
2 cloves garlic
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp capers
Juice of ½ lemon
Fresh herbs (thyme or rosemary)
Salt & pepper
Method:
Blend until slightly coarse, adjust seasoning, and serve with fresh bread.
